Around the World

In 1519, Ferdinand Magellan set sail from Spain with five ships to find a western route to the Moluccas. Magellan died in 1521, and Juan Sebastian Elcano went on to complete the mission, ultimately returning to Spain in September 1522 and circumnavigating the world.

Magellan is killed in a battle with locals. Elcano assumes control.

Elcano arrives in the Moluccas. A month later,having abandoned the Trinidad, they set out

for the return journey to Spain in the Victoria.

September 6, 1522

After an aborted attempt to take on fresh supplies in Portuguese-held Cabo Verde,

Elcano and 18 surviving crew members finally reach Spain, three years and 27 days since the

expedition set out from Seville.
