The skeletal remains of nine Lakota

youth who died at the infamous Carlisle

Indian Industrial School were brought

back to their Rosebud Sioux homelands

and laid to rest on July 17, 2021. It was a

long-awaited repatriation for their

relatives, who advocated for their

return for six years.

Starting in 1879, Native American

children from across the U.S. were

rounded up and sent by boxcar, boat,

wagon, and on foot to the government-

run school in Carlisle. The goal of the

school and the 366 to follow was forced

assimilation. Over 39 years

approximately 10,000 Native American

children went to Carlisle. Hundreds

didn’t make it out alive.
